I Thought I Had a Plan… Then God Said, “Watch This”

When Life Doesn’t Go as Planned: Trusting God’s Detours

Article written by Alli Rae Nippert

I’m a planner by nature. I love a good strategy, a mapped-out vision, and a timeline that makes sense. And for the longest time, I believed that if I just worked hard enough, stayed disciplined enough, and followed the plan closely enough, things would go exactly the way I expected.

But then God stepped in and said, “Watch this.”

And just like that, my well-laid plans started unraveling.

Doors I was pushing with all my might wouldn’t budge. Opportunities I thought were meant for me suddenly disappeared. The vision I had held onto so tightly felt like it was slipping through my fingers.

At the time, it felt like a setback. It felt frustrating, confusing, and honestly—just plain discouraging. But looking back? I can see that God wasn’t taking anything from me. He was redirecting me toward something far better.

When Your Plans Fall Apart, Maybe They're Falling Into Place

I think we all hit a point in life where we think we know exactly where we’re going. We pray over a dream, put in the work, and assume the path ahead will be straight. But then we hit a dead-end, and we start questioning everything.

Maybe you've been there. Maybe you're there right now.

But what if this detour isn’t a delay? What if it's divine protection? What if that closed door is actually God’s way of setting you up for something you wouldn’t have chosen on your own—but will be exactly what you need?

I’ve learned that when God interrupts my plans, it’s not because He’s withholding something from me. It’s because He’s preparing something greater for me.

Trusting God’s Timing (Even When It Doesn’t Make Sense)

Surrendering our plans isn’t easy. We like control. We like knowing what’s coming next. But here’s the truth: God sees the whole picture. While we’re focused on what’s right in front of us, He’s orchestrating things behind the scenes in ways we can’t even imagine.

If you’re feeling stuck, frustrated, or unsure of what’s next, I just want to encourage you today—this isn’t the end of the story.

That pause you’re in? Maybe it’s God’s protection.
That no you got? Maybe it’s making way for a better yes.
That change in direction? Maybe it’s leading you to something bigger, better, and more aligned with what He has for you.

When God Says “Watch This”

I don’t know where you are in your journey right now. Maybe you’re standing at a crossroads, unsure of what’s next. Maybe you’re walking through a season of uncertainty. Maybe you’re feeling like everything you worked for is slipping away.

But I do know this—when God says, “Watch this,” it’s always worth watching.

So take a deep breath. Let go of the grip you have on your plans. And trust that the One who sees the full picture is leading you exactly where you’re meant to be.

Because His plans? They’re always better.
